I took this photo of the Isuzukawa, a river that runs through Ise Jingu, Japan's most sacred shrine, where Amaterasu the Sun Goddess is said to reside. Surely the golden color of sunlight on the river must be a reflection. With the dragon like coils of light, almost resembling DNA strands, I choose it as the first banner photo for this website.
The character used to write the Year of the Monkey is 申 which also means to speak. The character is an image of a lightning bold descending on a rice field, energizing the air as it speaks. I tied a decorative Monkey's Fist Knot from two cords which are joined at the core of the fist, and could not help but notice the resemblance to how the character is drawn.
One of the most exciting projects of the New Year we have just launched is the Handmade Samurai Armor Project. I have organized that 5 professors and 10 students of iCLA will be able to create Samurai Armor from scratch, as you see here, and wear it in the Shingenko Matsuri, the largest Samurai Festival in the World as noted in the Guinness Book of World Records, which will be held in Kofu, Yamanashi on April 8~10. Look for updates here!
